It was while listening to a round table on Quebec comics at the Montreal Book Fair in November 1997 that the idea of ​​founding a publishing house came to co-founders Frédéric Gauthier and Martin Brault. That day, they were treated to the eternal pessimistic observation about the BDQ. They then wanted to breathe a little optimism into this ambient gloom and realize the challenge of making a publishing structure specializing in comics in Quebec viable.

The publishing house La Pastèque has published, to date, more than 230 titles.
